NXT Superstar of the Month (July 2016)

Each time the camera lights go on, one star shines brighter among the rest. This individual is victorious, constantly showing themselves and the WWE Universe they are deemed worthy of air time, our time and our hearts (or hatred for our beloved heels).   Each month, this particular person will be awarded NXT Superstar of the Month and for the month of July, this title goes to Finn Balor.

Finn Balor has been one of the most popular and most loved NXT Superstars to ever grace the developmental promotion.  Finn has defeated every Champion before him in the means of being the longest reigning NXT Champion at 292 days.  Although he was unsuccessful of retaining the NXT Championship from Samoa Joe at NXT TakeOver: Dallas, bigger things lied ahead.  When questioning what was next for Balor at NXT, his longtime friend and fellow NXT Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura answered it for him: a match.  It was not just a match, but a match between the two of them, a match NXT had been writing since Nakamura’s debut, a match that would resonate in NXT history, and a match that had the NXT Universe pleading for “The Icon of NXT” and “The King of Strong Style” to “fight forever.”  Although Balor’s arm was not raised in victory, he ended his legacy at NXT on quite a high note.  On July 19th, during the WWE Draft on the first ever Smackdown Live!, Finn Balor was drafted to Monday Night Raw as their third pick and was the first NXT Superstar out of six called up to the main roster.  The following week on Monday Night Raw which happened to fall on his 35th birthday, he won The Fatal 4Way as well as his match against the winner of the second Fatal 4Way, Roman Reigns.  This victory allows Finn to advance to SummerSlam to face Monday Night Raw’s first draft pick Seth Rollins to become the first ever WWE Universal Champion.

If Finn Balor is still wondering “What’s next?”, the answers are Championship gold, being in the main events on both Monday Night Raw and pay-per-views, WrestleMania moments, and many historic moments he’ll be creating as his legacy within WWE continues on.

NXT Superstar of the Month (June 2016)

I won’t lie, it’s usually difficult for me to choose the NXT Superstar of the Month because there are so many talented individuals who have moments of victory, success or stolen the attention of members from The NXT Universe.  Even though I had to think for a brief moment as to who to choose this month, The Revival continuously kept popping up as my first choice.  Clearly, they are the best choice.

Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson made history at NXT TakeOver: The End when they had their rematch for the NXT Tag Team Championship against The American Alphas.  Dash and Dawson lost their titles to Jason Jordan and Chad Gable at NXT TakeOver: Dallas and they were nothing short of determined to get them back.  The majority of The NXT Universe (myself included, a huge fan of The Revival) didn’t think Dash and Dawson would retain their titles.  Everyone was either behind The American Alphas or thought they were a sure win.  To our surprise (happily surprised for me), The Revival retained the titles, becoming the first 2x NXT Tag Team Champions.

I couldn’t be more thrilled for my boys. They are really a dominant force in NXT who without a doubt live up to their name, reviving the Tag Team division.  I have no doubt they will be keeping these titles around their waists for quite some time, including winning their rematch against The American Alphas in a 2 out of 3 Falls match scheduled for next week.  Regardless of the length of their reign, they have solidified their place in NXT history which most of the NXT roster – past, present and future – can’t say for themselves.

The week of Wrestlemania is always a phenomenal one, but this one especially for the roster of NXT. Some of their Wrestlemania moments occurred not even on the grand stage and the NXT Universe couldn’t care less. We were just so proud of them and so thrilled we got to be a part of their monumental milestones. Here is a recount of how NXT took over Wrestlemania (see what I did there?):

  • April 1, 2016 (NXT TakeOver: Dallas):
    • The American Alphas Jason Jordan and Chad Gable defeated The Revival’s Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson for the NXT Tag Team Championship.
    • Asuka defeated Bayley to become NXT Womens Champion
    • Shinsuke Nakamura made his official NXT debut
  • April 3, 2016 (Wrestlemania):
  • Baron Corbin won the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal
  • Former NXT Superstars Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Summer Rae, and Kalisto made their Wrestlemania debut
  • April 4, 2016 (Monday Night Raw):
  • Enzo Amore and Big Cass along with Apollo Crews made their main roster debut
  • April 7, 2016 (Thursday Night Smackdown):
  • The Vaudevillians made their main roster debut

So you can see why I could not just choose one NXT Superstar this month. NXT, as amazing and highly respect as it is as its own entity, is the starting point for these Superstars. They work hard and train hard daily to get to this point. To see their hard work payoff is not only gratifying but inspiring as well.
