TJ Perkins is crowned the first Cruiserweight Classic Champion

cwc

History was made last night as the inaugural winner of the Cruiserweight Classic was crowned. We witnessed 32 of the most talented men in the industry compete for this prestigious title, reducing the number from 32 to 16, then to 8 and finally, down to 4.  These four men competed in the semi-finals to move onto the finals for the chance to become victorious in this tournament.  These semi-final matches resulted in the following men advancing:

Gran Metalik vs Zack Sabre Jr.

Winner: Gran Metalik

Kota Ibushi vs TJ Perkins

Winner: TJ Perkins

Before Gran Metalik and TJ Perkins’ match took place, Triple H came out to make an exciting announcement. Whoever won this match would not only win the Tournament and the trophy, but would go onto Monday Night Raw as the first ever WWE Cruiserweight Champion!  Triple H introduced the belt to the WWE Universe and it’s somewhat identical to the Tag Team Championship belts with its circular shape, except it does resemble an octagon, placed on a purple strap with the “CWC” logo on the sides.  Triple H placed the title in front of both men, adding more motivation to these two competitors, handed it to the referee who held it high in the air with the bell being rung shortly after.

Throughout this whole competition, each competitor fought tooth and nail for this incredible opportunity, and last night was no different. Both men had given it their all then gave it some more.  As Triple H said prior to introducing everyone to the WWE Cruiserweight Championship belt, there can only be one winner and that winner was TJ Perkins as he successfully defeated Gran Metalik by submission.

Each competitor has their story, but Perkins’ really tugged at your heartstrings. Perkins experienced abandonment, became homeless, struggled financially all while chasing a dream everyone in his path said would never come true.  It’s been a rough journey throughout his eighteen years in the business, but it’s also had its moments of glory and triumph, this undeniably being the biggest moment in his life.  Deserving is an understatement and I could not be more excited for Perkins on the next step in his professional wrestling career.tjperkins

Final 2nd Round Qualifying Matches for the Cruiserweight Classics

cwc

The Cruiserweight Classic had their final 2nd round qualification matches last night and like every week since its debut, these competitors have provided us with high quality, top notch matches.  The winners of each match will be moving on to the quarter finals beginning next Wednesday, and those men are as follows.

Rich Swann vs Lince Dorado

Winner: Rich Swann

Drew Gulak vs Zack Sabre Jr.

Winner: Zack Sabre Jr.

TJ Perkins vs Johnny Gargano

Winner: TJ Perkins

I feel like I am a broken record when I say The Cruiserweight Classic never disappoints, but it’s true!  Each week is better than the last and you root for everyone to make it; that’s just how talented these men are.  I actually called my pick for match of the evening even before the show ended last night, because I felt nothing could top Drew Gulak vs Zack Sabre Jr. As incredible of a performance TJ Perkins, Johnny Gargano, Rich Swann and Lince Dorado put on last night, I felt Gulak and Sabre stole the show.  Counter after counter, it had me so entertained and captivated my attention.

Of course you know I want to know what you thought of last night’s Cruiserweight Classic and your match choice for match of the evening. Don’t be shy!  Let me know by leaving a comment below!

Be sure to catch the Cruiserweight Classic’s quarter finals next Wednesday, August 31st on the WWE Network 9pm ET!

Week 2 of Second Round CWC Qualifying Matches

cwcThe second round of Cruiserweight Classic qualifying matches pressed on last night and let me tell you, the closer we get to declaring a winner, the harder these men push themselves. The heart, the drive and the physicality is undeniably present and each man should be incredibly proud of themselves.  I know I am.  Let’s see who will be moving onto the quarter finals:

Akira Towaza vs Jack Gallagher

Winner: Akira Towaza

Noam Dar vs Hoho Lun

Winner: Noam Dar

Brian Kenderick vs Tony Nese

Winner: Brian Kenderick

The WWE Universe learned last night that Akira Towaza will be competing against Gran Metalik in the quarter finals, but Dar’s and Kenderick’s opponents are unknown at this time. I’ve become such a huge fan of Gallagher’s since the Cruiserweight Classic began and was really pulling for him to be in the final match of the tournament (Gallagher vs Metalik would be the final match if I had any say or influence).  Although he was unsuccessful advancing to the quarter finals, I have no doubt this won’t be the last time we’ll be seeing Gallagher in WWE.  This brings me to my next statement that Jack Gallagher vs Akira Towaza was my choice for last night’s match of the evening!  Brian Kenderick vs Tony Nese was the equivalent of Cedric Alexander vs Kota Ibushi’s match last week; they displayed nothing but passion and determination, giving it their absolute all in the squared circle.  However, Gallagher vs Towaza had me completely engrossed on every move, had me on the edge of my seat to the point where I was falling off the couch and biting my fingernails in suspense (figuratively, not literally.  I find that habit to be very gross).

Week 1 of Second Round CWC Qualifying Matches

cwcLast night kicked off the second round of qualifying matches in the Cruiserweight Classic Tournament. Last night was unlike any other.  What we witnessed was pure magic and it had me in tears.  I’ll tell you why in just one moment but before I do, I want to provide you with the results of last night’s matches.  It looks like since the number of participants has been decreased from 32 to 16, the Cruiserweight Classic Tournament is cutting its matches from 4 a night to 2.  It certainly allows more time for these men to fight for the coveted WWE contract.  Below are the results from last night’s matches:

Taijiri vs Gran Metalik

Winner: Gran Metalik

Kota Ibushi vs Cedric Alexander

Winner: Kota Ibushi

The end of the second match was where I became an emotional mess. Cedric fought, and I mean, fought to advance in the tournament.  You not only saw it by the brilliant performance he put on in the ring, but even after the match had ended.  He was drenched in sweat and tears and the pain of losing was clearly visible on Cedric’s face.  The crowd bombarded him with “Thank you, Cedric!” chants as he made his way out of the arena, followed by “Please sign, Cedric!” chants.   As those chants filled the arena, Triple H came out and shook Cedric hand’s, giving the fans thumbs up, and walked Cedric to the back with his hand on his Cedric’s back.  This shows clear indication (to me anyway) that WWE just added one more man to their roster, but an official statement has yet to be released.

What an incredible night. I have a feeling moving forward more amazing and memorable moments will occur as we get closer to announcing a winner.  What are your thoughts on last night’s Cruiserweight Classic matches?  Let me know by leaving a comment below!

Week 4 of The Cruiserweight Classic Qualifying Matches

cwcBefore we begin with the matches and results from this week’s Cruiserweight Classic Qualifying Matches, I want to begin by correcting an error I had made.  I had stated on last week’s Cruiserweight Classic Qualifying Matches that it was the final qualifying round, which is incorrect.  This week was indeed the last week of qualifying matches and the second round will begin the following week.  I apologize for any confusion this misinformation may have caused anyone.  Now onto why you’re really here.

This week’s final round qualification matches were all incredibly entertaining and it was exciting to see who would advance to the second round.  The matches of this week’s Cruiserweight Classic and their results are provided below:

Rich Swann vs Jason Lee

Winner: Rich Swann

Noam Dar vs Girv Sihra

Winner: Noam Dar

Jack Gallagher vs Fabian Aichner

Winner: Jack Gallagher

Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa

Winner: Johnny Gargano

After each match had declared a winner, we learned who their opponent will be for the second round.  Those individuals are as follows:

Lince Dorado will face Rich Swann

Hoho Lun will face Noam Dar

Akira Towaza will face Jack Gallagher

TJ Perkins will face Johnny Gargano

I know the internet was buzzing over Gargano and Ciampa’s match, saying it was the best match out of the whole Cruiserweight Classic Tournament thus far.  I disagree.  As great as it was given the friend factor enhancing the excitement of the match, I don’t feel it was the best match of the night let alone the match of the tournament.  To me, the match of the evening was Jack Gallagher vs Fabian Aichner.  Both gentlemen were athletic, agile, and highly entertaining.  Once you thought we had seen the end of the match, they would kick out every time!  I liked Gallagher and Aichner so much that I got behind them both!, which means I would have been thrilled with whoever was to advance.  I have a feeling WWE knows what they could have in someone like Aichner, so I don’t think this Wednesday was the last we’ll see of this Italian native.

Week 3 of The Cruiserweight Classic Qualifying Matches

cwcLast night, we witnessed last four matches in Round 1 of The Cruiserweight Classic. The men who won their matches last night will be moving on to face those who also won their qualifying matches, getting closer to crowning the winner of The Cruiserweight Classic Tournament.  The matches from tonight’s Tournament and the winners advancing are as follows:

Tyson Dux vs Zack Sabre Jr.

Winner: Zack Sabre Jr.

Drew Gulak vs Harv Sihra

Winner: Drew Gulak

Tony Nese vs Anthony Bennett

Winner: Tony Nese

Raul Mendoza vs Brian Kendrick

Winner: Brian Kendrick

To be honest, I was doing other things as I was watching this week’s Cruiserweight Classic Tournament (it’s been a busy week!) so I can’t honestly announce which match I felt was the match of the evening. I saw most of Sabre vs Dux, but I don’t want to give it the title of match of the night based on that fact alone.   Next week, we’re onto Round 2!

Who do you feel would be considered the match of the evening? Let me know by leaving a comment below!

Week 2 of Cruiserweight Classic Qualifying Matches

cwc

Another amazing night of qualifying matches for The Cruiserweight Classics is in the books and everyone involved did an incredible job. There is no denying the participants in last night’s event gave it their all to move onto the next round, all while entertaining the fans in the process.  Unfortunately, there can only be one winner in each matchup and the winners of last night’s matches are as follows:

 Tajiri vs Damian Slater

Winner: Tajiri

TJ Perkins vs Da Mack

Winner: TJ Perkins

Mustafa Ali vs Lince Dorado

Winner: Lince Dorado

Akira Towaza vs Kenneth Johnson

Winner: Akira Towaza

It was announced last night that Tajiri will face Gran Metalik in the second round. At this time, Perkins, Dorado and Towaza’s opponents are unknown.  I would have to say that out of all four matches last night, my favorite by far was TJ Perkins vs Da Mack.  These two just complimented each other so well and their athleticism individually is just outstanding.  There is no way WWE can let someone as gifted and as talented as Da Mack walk away, or as he did last night, moonwalk away.  It would be a crying shame to let him slip through their fingers and fall into another wrestling promotion’s hands.  I hope WWE makes the smart decision and signs Da Mack as soon as possible!
