Match of the Month (August 2016)

With the weekly airings of Monday Night Raw and Smackdown Live! along with monthly pay-per-views, we are bound to witness one match that outshines the rest.  One match that has you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, thrashing your body around in excitement, and screaming in happiness, anger or anxiety throughout the entire match.  It leaves your heart pounding and any word off the tip of your tongue that night is about that match.  That match will be featured in this blog segment titled Match of the Month!

August’s Match of the Month takes place on Smackdown Live, August 23rd.  AJ Styles boasted about how phenomenal he was at Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view as he beat John Cena.  While speaking with some members of the locker room, Dolph Ziggler had his head down in defeat, not saying a word.  AJ noticed and commented on Dolph’s unsuccessful attempt at obtaining the WWE World Championship against Dean Ambrose at SummerSlam, continuing to press Dolph’s buttons until Dolph rightfully snapped.  This continued throughout the show until Daniel Bryan found a resolution to the problem: Dolph Ziggler vs AJ Styles would take place as the main event that night.  If AJ won, he would face Dean Ambrose at Backlash for the WWE World Championship and if Dolph Ziggler won, he would be added to the Championship match which would make it a Triple Threat Match.

Dean Ambrose accompanied JBL, Mauro Ranallo and David Otunga on commentary to watch AJ Styles take on Dolph Ziggler. Dolph Ziggler did a lot of technical wrestling in this match which took AJ down -and by surprise – each time.  Styles interrupted Ziggler’s hot streak by throwing him face first – and hard – into the top turnbuckle followed by a Pendulum Backbreaker.  AJ tried to pin Dolph but he kicked out at two.  Shortly after, Dolph resumes his advantage in the match and moments later, hits AJ Styles with his signature Famouser maneuver twice but unfortunately for Dolph, AJ kicked both times.  After taking a knee to the back followed by a Body Slam, Dolph hits AJ with an incredible Satellite DDT and pins AJ who kicks out at two.  As AJ Styles tries to connect his Styles Classic maneuver on Ziggler, Ziggler counters into his own maneuver, the Zig Zag and tries to pin Styles again but again, kicks out at two.  It was until AJ hit Dolph with the Styles Clash that we saw a pin successfully make it to the three count.

Winner: AJ Styles

Ugh, my poor Dolph. He fought so hard to advance in this Championship match, just like he did at SummerSlam with unfortunately the same result.  There is a plan for Dolph, I just know it, but what it is I’m not sure.  Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan wouldn’t be pushing The Show Off this hard if they didn’t see something special and something Championship-worthy in him.  As much as I would have loved to have seen a Triple Threat Match at Backlash, this singles competition between AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship is going to be awesome!
