Cruiserweight Classic Match of the Month (July 2016)

Since The Cruiserweight Classic debuted on The WWE Network on July 13th, it has become an immediate success.  Those who may not be familiar with the cruiserweight division or independent wrestling are being introduced to a whole different world of high fliers and agility from the best talent from all over the globe.  There was no denying that The Cruiserweight Classic would be something special but these competitors have truly stolen the hearts and attention of everyone tuning in every Wednesday.  It left such an impression on me that as a blogger, I just had to dedicate a monthly blog segment in its honor aside from the weekly tournament results.  Without further ado, I bring you the first ever Cruiserweight Classic Match of the Month.

This match was the very first match to kick off Round 1 in The Cruiserweight Classic Tournament and without a doubt, has been my absolute favorite match thus far. Representing Mexico, Gran Metalik faces Alejandro Saez from Chile.

Gran Metalik comes out first, followed by Alejandro Saez. The referee informs them that they’ve already been made aware of the rules backstage and asks if either one of them have any questions.  After they inform the referee they do not by shaking their heads, Metalik and Saez shake hands and the referee rings the bell.  Saez kicks off the match by locking an Armbar on Metalik who is able to flip out of it, which you can clearly see shocks Saez.  Saez hits Metalik with a Basement Drop followed by a Double Fist to the back which receives a negative reaction from fans as they filled the arena with boos.  Saez then pulls Metalik up by his hair, gets him on his feet and puts Metalik in a Headlock.  Metalik punches Saez in the mid-section but Saez keeps the Headlock in place, even when he bumps the ropes.  However, Metalik gets out of it when Saez bumps the ropes and pushes Saez but Saez hits Metalik with a Shoulder Block.  Saez once again bumps the ropes which Metalik rolls up to catch Saez with his legs but Saez moves out of the way to bump the opposite ropes and hits Metalik with a Double Kick to his mid-section.  Saez pins Metalik but he kicks out at one.  Saez and the referee go back and forth as Saez disagrees with the count, but the referee confirms Metalik kicked out at one.

Saez immediately kicks Metalik in the back then picks him up by the head and goes to have Metalik bump the ropes but Metalik swings Saez who flips over the top rope. Metalik goes charging at Saez who connects his shoulder to Metalik’s mid-section.  Saez jumps off the top rope and connects an Airboard Dropkick on Metalik’s chest.  Saez tries to go for the pin but Metalik kicks out at two.

Saez stumbles back into the corner of the ring, looking stunned that Metalik kicked out of the Airboard Dropkick. Saez once again disputes with the referee about the count and yet again, the referee confirms with Saez that Metalik kicked out at two.  Saez walks over to Metalik, picks him up by the head, and begins giving him chops to the chest.  Saez tosses Metalik in order to bump the ropes, which he does but he does a flip rather than bumping in Saez’s direction.  Saez charges at Metalik who hits Saez with a Superkick.  As Saez is down, Metalik jumps onto the second rope, and some amazing footwork, and hits Saez with a Double Kick that send Saez flying outside of the ring.  Metalik runs from the opposite side of the ring, Springboards off the 2nd rope and flips onto Saez.  Not only was commentary flipping out at the sight of this move but so were the fans chanting “Metalik!”  Now it’s Metalik’s turn to take Saez by the head and throws him into the ring.  Metalik climbs up to the top turnbuckle, walks the top ropes and his Saez with a Splash.  Metalik goes for the pin but Saez kicks out at two.

Metalik slaps Saez several times in the chest which Saez gets out of quickly by tossing Metalik to bump the ropes but Metalik flips over the top rope and lands on the apron.  Saez then connects a Round House Kick to Metalik’s face which sends him flying onto the ground.  Saez then connects an absolutely incredible Shooting Star Press onto Metalik!  After regaining his strength (because you could see it knocked the wind right out both Saez and Metalik!), Saez rolls Metalik back into the ring.  Saez climbs onto the top turnbuckle to flip onto Metalik, but Metalik moves and Saez lands hard on the mat.  As Saez stands up, Metalik charges at him and hits him with a Corner Clothesline.  Metalik puts Saez up on his shoulders for a Fisherman’s Carry and into a Fisherman’s Driver!  Metalik pins for the win and advances to the second round The Cruiserweight Classic Tournament.

Winner: Gran Metalik

I seriously couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this Cruiserweight Classic Tournament than with a match of this caliber.  You really have to give it to both of these men; they fought tooth and nail for such a huge opportunity.  And for someone like Alejandro Saez who learned how to wrestle through online videos and traveling to different countries to receive professional training is absolutely admirable.  It shows you how badly he wanted to wrestle professional as well as this opportunity and I hope this exposure provides him with some wonderful opportunities in this industry.  As for Metalik, he moves onto the second round to face the veteran Tajiri.  After this match, I became such a huge fan of his and I’m putting all my cards on the table for him to win it all.

This match is available to rewatch on The WWE Network as well as The Cruiserweight Classic Tournament every Wednesday at 9pm ET!
